The YMCA of Greater Bergen County offers program to combat childhood obesity
The YMCA of Greater Bergen County recently announced a partnership with the Stop & Shop Giant Family Foundation who has joined the Horizon Foundation of New Jersey in offering the award-winning CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) curriculum at all five Hackensack YMCA After School sites.

The $28,000 Stop & Shop Giant Foundation Grant made it possible to expand the one-day-a-week program to a three-day-a-week program.

"This program helps to fight childhood obesity and, now with the additional support from the Stop & Shop Giant Foundation, we will be able to give the children a firm foundation for living a healthy lifestyle,” says Nelson Louis, CEO of the YMCA.

The CATCH curriculum has three distinct components for success: physical education, nutrition education and parental involvement.
  • The physical education component incorporates fun fitness activities, and competency and cognitive understanding about the importance of physical activity with an emphasis on non-elimination games and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.
  • The nutrition education component teaches children how to identify, adopt and practice healthy eating habits. The program encourages changes in behavior that support healthy eating patterns.
  • Parents will be informed of the program’s objectives and will be encouraged to support their child’s participation.
The YMCA After School Program is for children in grades kindergarten through seventh who attend a Hackensack Public School. The program meets during the school year from 3-6 p.m. Registration for the September 2009 school year is open now.
