In a spirited competition, chef Christine Nunn of Picnic Caterers, Emerson, triumphed over 2008 Ultimate Chef Bergen County Joseph Cerniglia of Campania, Fair Lawn, for this year’s title. The final rounds were held on Feb. 28 at Chef Central, Paramus.
This was the second annual competition, which pitted six chefs against each other one-on-one in an “Iron Chef”-style format in Chef Central’s “kitchen stadium.”
Each chef prepared a four-course meal featuring a “secret ingredient,’ which was judged by a panel of four judges. Of a possible 100-point score, 50 points were awarded for taste, 20 for presentation, 10 for degree of difficulty, 10 for cooking skills and 10 for innovation. In the semi-final round, Nunn bested chef Joseph Macri of Hennessy Tavern, Northvale, for the right to challenge Cerniglia.
The judges for the final round were (201) food editor Susan Leigh Sherrill, The Record food editor Bill Pitcher, certified master chef Ken Arnone and CMC Tom Griffiths, dean of Global Studies at the Culinary Institute of America. The “secret ingredient” was honey, which Nunn used to her advantage in a classic, French menu.
